In metal fabrication, "cutting" is easy to control; a laser follows a programmed path. "Bending" is predictable with CNC machines. But Welding? Welding is where chaos happens. Heat causes metal to expand, contract, warp, and twist.

What is a Welding Fixture?

A fixture (or jig) is a custom-built tool designed to hold a specific set of parts in the exact correct geometric relationship to each other.

Think of it as a "mold" for fabrication. It creates a rigid structure that forces the metal parts to stay in the correct alignment, even when the intense heat of the welding arc tries to pull them apart.

The Two Types of Fixturing We Use

1. Modular Fixturing (For Low to Medium Volume)

For batches of 10 to 50 parts, we utilize Modular Welding Tables (often called 3D welding tables). These are precision-ground tables with a grid of holes.

  • How it works: We use a kit of standardized clamps, stops, and angles to build a temporary "frame" for your part.

  • The Benefit: Fast setup time and no dedicated tooling cost for you.

2. Dedicated Fixturing (For High Volume)

For orders of 500+ parts, or for complex robotic welding jobs, we engineer a Dedicated Fixture.

  • How it works: We laser-cut and build a permanent steel frame specifically for your product. It uses quick-release toggle clamps to load and unload parts in seconds.

  • The Benefit: 100% repeatability. The part cannot be loaded incorrectly. This creates the "Poka-Yoke" (mistake-proofing) standard that automotive and industrial clients demand.

Why Fixturing Saves You Money

Clients sometimes ask, "Why is there a tooling charge on my quote?" The answer is Speed and Quality.

Without a fixture, a welder might spend 10 minutes measuring, squaring, and tacking a frame. With a fixture, they drop the parts in, clamp them, and weld immediately. That 10-minute setup drops to 30 seconds. Over a run of 100 parts, the fixture pays for itself by drastically lowering the labor cost per unit.

Controlling Thermal Distortion

Heat distortion is the enemy of precision. When metal gets hot, it moves. A robust fixture acts as a Heat Sink, absorbing some of the thermal energy and mechanically restraining the part so it cools in the correct shape, rather than warping into a pretzel.
